Chia seeds have been marketed as a ‘superfood’ recently, which automatically leads to shops increasing the price. When you see a superfood splashed on the label of a food you tend to think it must have extra benefits that other foods do not. Don’t let the term ‘Superfood’ fool you into paying more than what you should for any product!
I got my Chia Seeds at home in Ireland, in Aldi-super cheap compared to what they try to charge here in Bahrain 🙂 Adding chia seeds to your diet won’t help you magically lose weight! A healthy diet & exercise will do that. What chia seeds do bring to your diet is a boost in fiber, omega-3s, calcium, protein and have been said to have as much or even more antioxidants than blueberries!
So the bottom line is, enjoy them as part of a healthy and varied diet, exercise regularly and you will see results; don’t rely on ‘super foods’ or magic shakes/pills to do this!
See my recipe below for a protein-packed meal that can be made overnight and served as a quick and easy breakfast. The recipe can be tweaked to suit you, e.g. you don’t have to add protein.
-4tbsp whole chia seeds
-1 scoop protein powder (I use ON 100% Whey in Chocolate)
-1 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
-1 tsp agave nectar (optional)
-1 tsp cacao powder (optional)
-5 medium strawberries (chopped)
-1/2 cup blueberries
Mix the protein powder and almond milk together in a bowl.
Add chia seeds, agave nectar and cacao powder and mix again.
Leave in the fridge for 10 minutes until slightly set.
Stir again to break up any clumps before leaving overnight in the fridge to set properly.
If you’re very lazy in the mornings, prep your strawberries and have them ready in the fridge. (I chopped mine up small)
Wake up, layer into a glass chia pudding, strawberries, blueberries & repeat.
*I used around ¾ of the chia mixture in mine (Keep this in mind when looking at nutritional info).
